You Don't Need A Vacation To Be "Off"

November 05, 2017

When my phone died two minutes into my nightly post-dinner chores I’ll admit I panicked a little. Of course, I could’ve run upstairs, grabbed my charger, and resumed business as usual, but it made no sense. My hands were already covered in suds and a watery mixture of tonight's dinner. So, I accepted my fate and commenced my definite 30-45 minutes of hell in my silenced kitchen. It was almost seamless how my psyche changes as soon as I let it go. I was “off”.
You Don't Need A Vacation To Be "Off".png

It’s almost as if my mind was designed to function without a phone strapped to my hand at every second. Absentmindedly, I instantly turned to singing and thinking about my day, but there was a difference. I realize that difference was mindfulness. Instead of the singing that I do in the car or the singing I do while moving from one task to another, I was using my brain to be meticulous about the notes I places and conscious of my breathing. Instead of thinking about my day as a vague to do list of checked and unchecked items, I was reflecting on the contents of my day, what it had meant, and what tomorrow count possibly entail and mean.

style sneakers.png At a time in my life where it feels like everyone is rushing and hustling to this end destination and nobody has informed me on what we’re doing and where we’re going, I realized the missing piece to my sanity was mindfulness. This reason why I have no real drive to get these college essays done, or no motivation to put my all into the last few remaining high school classes I have, and the reason I feel overwhelmed every single moment of the day. It’s like I’ve let myself be a backseat passenger in the most important part of my life thus far. All this time I was wishing for some kind of magical three day vacation away from my life that would surely get me on track and have me in the right headspace, but I realize all I really need is a step back from my life, aka my phone, for at least a few minutes every day to have my head right. So in the spirit of that, I’ll make a list of some life changes written in the third person that I bet will be applicable to most people, or at least seniors going through college mayhem.

  1. Please use your planner. You even got a cute one!! You can’t possibly remember everything you have coming up, everything you have to do, and plan things that you don’t even know you have to do yet without it. It’ll literally save your life, and your grades, and your sanity.
  2. Make time for more beautiful things. Take some pictures, take a second to look at the leaves, drive around town you (hopefully) won’t be living here next year.
  3. Drink smartly. Coffee that is. You’ve been getting into coffee recently and it's actually kind of worrying. Maybe try getting some sleep?
  4. Clean! Get your space together once and for all so it doesn’t bug you every day and so you do the “I’m anxious about everything, so I’m going to clean to regain a tiny bit of control” clean.
  5. Go out with your friends, even if it is hours in Starbucks writing essays together at least you can suffer together.
  6. Get off your phone once in awhile! You’ll be surprised how clear you think when you aren’t preoccupied with checking twitter, or sending a streak on snapchat, or texting back someone. No more mindless scrolling. Things can wait.
  7. Fill random extra minutes with something constructive. Rather than five minutes of twitter time, you could have five minutes of conversation with a friend or even a stranger, or five minutes of journaling.
  8. Try not to procrastinate on college stuff. It’s pretty destructive, but set aside hours when you’re not tired, not stressed, and just work it out. You’ll be thankful for it come deadlines.

fickle favorites

July 13, 2017

I have found that I am really fickle with favorites. I really wish I could have a definitive favorite anything, but to be honest I am easily amused and fall in love with anything at the drop of a hat. So, quick, before they change, here are my favorites of everything I can remember at this snapshot of history and a quick few sentence plea to make you love them as much as I do.

Favorite Book
The Sun is a Star Also

This book converges two schools of thought that I so often battle with, the practical and the wondrous. While tackling the possibility of their existences, circumstances of love, and whether or not fate is the cause of the entropy that makes up their lives, the dreamy David and rooted Natasha bring the reader on a journey that makes them contemplate the weight a single day can have. This book had me enraptured, enamored, and scrambling to the end where I would eventually sob uncontrollably, but for why, you don't know.

Favorite Movie
Stuck in Love

This movie is everything I could have ever asked for in a movie. It's my definitive writer's block cure. It's a sweet, witty, sad, and well-rounded story of a family of writers and their happenstances with love and life and never fails to fill me up with whatever my head needs.

Favorite Place
my bed

Pretty generic, but I love my bed. For my introverts out there, or my ambiverts, which I think I am, having alone time, or time where you don't have to be around other people, or socializing or being charming or cool or funny or just plain existing outside of your shell can be simply exhausting. My bed and further my room is the one place I have where only I can exist in and I have time to recharge and be my best self whether that be by watching Netflix for hours, or reading, or sleeping.

Favorite TV Show
Jane the Virgin

Jane the Virgin has so much appraisal because it is everything a tv show has the potential to be shoved into one entity that everyone can love. It tackles hard issues like sexuality, religion, and abortion while still managing to be out-of-breath-laughing hilarious. I love the telenovela or soap opera drama with the weight of still being a seriously good tv show that can undoubtedly put me in a good mood.

Favorite Belonging
my journals

One of my favorite things to do is to reflect on myself and my growth as a person and how different I have become and changed (hopefully for the better). Journals are my mode of doing that. Through the things I've written, my ideas, my midnight rambles, my angst-ridden scribbles, my fake deep poems, and my hopes for the future I am able to see a preserved image of Maryam X-years ago and reconcile her with present Maryam in a healthy way. #NoRagrets

Favorite Song
Arizona by Common Souls

A real random one. It sounds nothing like what I usually listen to, but it gives off the perfect vibes. It's just chill quiet song that puts me in a trance every single time I listen to it. Before I know it my head is bobbing to the baseline or simple drum rhythms. It's just everything I need and I can't wait to learn more about Common Souls and see what they come out with. This song was one of the very few hits on my Discover Weekly Spotify Playlist.

Favorite Clothing Item
distressed mom jeans

It's always good to find an article of clothing that goes with virtually everything and these are my summer go to's. My past few Instagrams were actually in those jeans (they were taken a while apart, I swear). They're pretty much a staple at this point. There are a few things everyone should have in their closet and some distressed mom jeans are on that short-list for me.

Favorite Shoes
Adidas Neo

Shoes like these are edging on overdone, but they're still a pretty versatile pair of shoes that I really wanted in my closet. It also didn't help that I got the look I wanted, for much cheaper than the usual cost. I haven't had much time to figure out styling them yet, but this fall will be full of these shoes for busy walking days and chill casual days.

Favorite Quote
by Roald Dahl

This encompasses my life goal. I want to live, not merely be alive. To spend my days doing something useful and to have made a difference by the end of my time. Here's my pact to be white-hot and passionate about everything I commit myself to.

Favorite Album
bad blood by bastille

It's rare for me to listen to an entire album, end to end and be as enthralled with every song to the next, but this one did it. In the four years the albums been out, I can still listen to it and love it as much as the first time. Every song has a message, every song hits deep, and there's a perfect mix of songs to make you want to cry or dance around or somehow do both at the same time. A word to describe the entire piece is: cinematic.

2016

January 16, 2017

Earlier this year I made a series of promises to myself. They were a few of my goals towards seeing myself as the person I wanted to be in 2017. I envisioned myself to be a more productive, goal driven, and overall happier person and I can see all of these attributions in myself this year. Though this year was a turbulent one, I have to say that it was definitely the best one of my life. In this one year, I have accomplished so much and putself out into the world which I can’t help but be immensely proud of. Now that this year is almost to a close, it is now time to reflect on my resolutions and start dreaming up some new ones for the coming year.

I did exactly this this year. Music was at the forefront of my life. I auditioned and made it into two elite singing groups, I performed an Italian aria for a judge and recieved a superior rating, and I greatly improved my sight reading and singing skills. This entire year I was able to put hard work to my talent and make really cool things happen because of it.

The next of my goals for this year was to finally get my liscence, which I did! I finally got all my hoops in line, finished all the classes and time needed and was able to pass the test on the first time! You can now see this girl driving around town, probably wasting an exorbidant amount of money at Starbucks - I’ve already earned 114 stars in this past month.

This next one was my first fail of a resolution, treating my body better. I have not been sleeping, or exercising that much, but I have been eating better and drinking water. Not a passing grade, but also not a complete fail in my book. This year i'll be trying to put more dicipline and initiative to this area.
This one makes me really sad to not have achieved - taking writing and blogging more seriously. Are the student life and the blogger life really not compatible? If that is the case I’m straight out of luck because I have 10+ more years of education in the cards for me. Maybe I’ll figure it out one of these days.

I have gotten a lot better at this skill in the past year which has helped my grades flourish - not a B in sight! I have figured out how to study and how to fit an EXTREMELY busy life into the time I have. I somehow was able to juggle a high school schedule, college schedule, extracurriculars, and LIVING my life into one semester and made it out with straight A’s (a feat I have never done). Like always, there’s still improvement to be made, but I’m glad for the progress I have made and where I can be in the near future.

I was daunted, yet excited to figure out the next portion of my resolutions. This one was to figure out what colleges I wanted to go to and my major. For a major, I finally figured out I want to go into neuroscience for pre-med to become a neuroscientist or neurosurgeon. I am utterly fascinated by the functions of the brain and how that relates to people, their actions, and different illnesses, so I’m glad to have finally figured out my path. For my short list of real dream schools or places I can really see myself in the fall of 2018 I have five favorites.

My top two schools are NYU and Columbia. Both of which are remarkable schools, and both are situated in the beautiful city of New York whcih gives them bonus points. My next two schools are located in or around another beautiful city, Chicago. Northwestern and University of Chicago. Half growing up there built my affinity for the place and cities in general whcih is obvious in my picks here. The last, but not least, school is THE Ohio State University, right in my backyard. In addition to being right here at home, it boasts handsome academic and medical campuses - not to mention in-state tuition. I am excited to see where the search and applying process will take me as a I look to my senior year later in 2017.
This goal was placed not much out of want, but neccesity. To get into a college program this year I needed an ACT score and one to set me apart prom the other applicants, so that is what I did. In the spring of my sophomore year I received a 30 and in December I got a 31! Now it’s time to do a little bit better. Maybe a 32 or 33?
My final and favorite resolution of the year was to read at least 30 books. I thought this number was way too high and I could never meet this goal with my schedule, but to my surprise I met it in July! Funny how you can meet lofty goals if you set them at the forefront of your mind. My final tally for the year sits at 38 books, I think. I may have forgotten some along the way. My favorite of the year was We All Looked Up by Tommy Wallach, a book so dear to my heart and have put into the hands of so many friends since I have read it. I will probably write soemthing in full about the book soon, but for now I will say the character Anita is practically modeled after my life!
Well this has been a recap of my resolutions and pretty much the highlights of my 2016. Thank you for reading, Happy New Year, and see you soon with some new resolutions to smash!

maybe...

June 28, 2016

maybe when I'm old and cynical I'll understand.
for now I see through new eyes,
hazy eyes, dreamy eyes,
eyes that see possibility, that see opportunity,
eyes that sugar coat life,
eyes that pull hope from every possible caveat,
a privilege only youth can give,
maybe when I'm old and cynical I'll understand passion.
my mind will have drive,
understand the drive, crave the drive,
my mind will invent ways upon ways to fulfill its purpose,
this ripe passion will consume my heart, my mind my soul, my being,
maybe when I'm old and cynical I'll understand sparks.
this skin will feel electricity,
raw emotion flitting on its surface,
every combination these colors of the mind display themselves as,
I'll understand instant connections,
slow detachment,
and dead ends,
maybe when I'm old and cynical I'll understand love.
this heart will swell to compact love to its highest capacity
this heart will give, and give, and give,
and hopefully revive,
hopefully receive that reciprocal love it deserves,
maybe when I'm old and cynical I'll understand the longing.
these eyes will know time and waiting,
they'll know watching and wishing,
eyes that will hope beyond hope for the impossible,
eyes that know subconsciously that it can't be,
maybe when I'm old and cynical I'll understand loss.
these ears will know voices that no longer come around,
they'll hear favorite words, favorite conversations, favorite laughs,
they'll hear lost words,
words unsaid, words thought, words implied,
words that could've changed the course of events,
words that should've changed history
my history,
maybe when I'm old and cynical I'll understand death.
a spectacle to the human eyes,
the absence of the life so long craved,
the abstract concept of a soul free of its housing,
my heart, my eyes, my ears, my skin, my nose,
will witness the finality of the subject,
the faithful shadow waiting and watching for the Time.

favorite tangible things

June 01, 2016

These items mean something to me. I think all good items should have a good meaning lodged behind them. It's like on those home renovation or fashion makeover shows when the host says "You have to get rid of everything that doesn't have sentimental value." All of a sudden the victim of this show is forced to reevaluate their whole life and find themselves through these items. These are a few of the items I would keep.

{Watches}

This is my budding watch collection. You know that thing that happens every year around your birthday, or other holidays where suddenly you can't think of a single thing you could possibly want? That's pretty much what happened here. My dad asked and I had absolutely no idea, but after a little thought watches popped into my head. My dad has a bunch of watches, as they are a thing he likes to wear, so I thought why not try it myself. I have two so far, one for each birthday since the tradition started. The first is my little black skagen watch, the second is this Daniel Wellington watch from this January.

{Journals}

Journals are an obvious thing that are very dear to my heart. They hold all of my prized possessions, my thoughts, ideas, and hopes, for safe keeping and later reflection. This is one of many journals that I have accumulated and filled over the course of about 5 years. I can't wait to see this small pile grow.

(I removed the book sleeve so that I wouldn't destroy it while reading)

 {Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone}

This item is a relatively new item to me, but its depth goes a lot deeper than that. Harry Potter was something I grew up with and like many children of the era I was completely obsessed with it. I started reading them in the second grade and was hooked ever since. I mean even to a 7 year old the premise is amazing. A completely ordinary boy, or even less extraordinary than that, gets to find out he can do magic and live in a whole other world full of wonders, witches, and wizards, and hone these magical capabilities in a castle beyond belief. All the while he has his very own villain that no matter his malevolent plans, Harry can always arise above. The artwork of this edition brings even more life to the book that encompassed my childhood for so many years. I hope to collect the full illustrated set and keep them for my children to marvel over.

(this is one of my favorite pages in the book as the castle ghosts look almost fluorescent on the page)

(look how much detail!!)
(vignette of the same picture pt.1)
(vignette pt.2)

{Roses}
These are the roses of the headboard of my bed. These hold significance because they are really my home base. No matter what happens from the time I leap out of bed, till when I return, or wherever I may travel I always have my beautiful petrified rose garden to return to.

thoughts

my women motivators

March 31, 2016

I think one of the most important things growing up as a little girl, especially in this day, is to have a steady role model. Being able to see your goals and dreams manifested in someone else, or someone overcoming and becoming successful and making change is empowering. Seeing them lets you know, for sure, that these dreams are real and attainable and you, that little girl, can get to them too. It helps to see a women in these positions in my eyes also. You could be anywhere in the world  and see men’s accomplishments and accolades praised left, right and center, but what about women? Why can’t women be presidents, or scientists, engineers doctors.

They can!

Being able to see that role model can serve as a beacon of hope to push through that tough day at school, or that paper that you were positive would break you. Which makes all the difference in staying motivated through the ups and downs in life.

In honor of Women’s History Month coming to its closure these are some of my favorite contemporary female role models. These brilliant women push past barriers to do what they do, and work to educate others in the process and inspire me to be the brilliant woman I want to be one day.

{Karlie Kloss}

Karlie Kloss is an amazing and hardworking model, (and victoria's secret angel too!) but her modeling isn't the main thing I look to her for. She has a bright and airy personality and many other hobbies and pursuits such as a love for coding and baking which add to her depth. Her work and fascination in education of coding to young girls goes toward creating astounding, and intelligent women. AND, she does all of this while attending my dream school, NYU.

{Beyonce}
Ever since her Destiny’s Child days, Beyonce has been one of my biggest role models. I practically grew up with Beyonce as my imaginary fabulous aunt accomplishing greatness. Her professionalism, humbleness, and poise has always been remarkable, not to mention her incredible talent. Her outspoken feminism and support of movements like BlackLivesMatter in the public eye brings to attention important although underspoken and “uncomfortable” topics.

{Emma Watson}

Emma Watson is another person I grew up loving. As an avid Harry potter fan and established bookworm, her character in the Harry Potter series inevitably resonated with me growing up showing it’s okay to be smart as a girl and my talents will come to help. I also admire her love for school and decision to continue on to college when there were so many options thrown her way. Her outspokenness about femisnist issues on a large scale with a large audience with grace and poise of  such a young women inspires me to do that myself.

Thank you for reading!! xx Mary

The New Year

January 10, 2016

With the New Year we can take time to reflect on a year past, and take in the rush of the year to become. I used to be huge on resolutions, and the millions of larger than life promises I could make to myself. To forget in the weeks coming, but I think I understand them finally. A new year can be a time of rebirth and resurgence of hope for change and actualizing of goals. These goals that we set can be large or small. But, they have to do something we actually want to do, and actually will put our minds to. It's kind of a quality, over quantity kind of thing. If you have a few golden resolutions that you feel really great about, and 15 dull but 'obligatory' goals, the few would always win out. Without all the 'fluff' resolutions those few crisp goals will stick, and follow into a New Year of happiness and movement forward. With this new mindset I created a few broad goals for myself that I have great faith in carrying out in the coming year.
  • learn more and accomplish more musically
I'm very passionate about music, but it easily becomes something I push off for more 'practical' things and I really want to change that.
  • get my license
It's part of growing up and it can't be a thing I push off, it needs to happen!
  • treat my body better
This is an overall reminder to myself to sleep more -and at the right time- , drink water, eat healthier, and exercise more.
  • time manage better
I've been trying to work on this for about forever, but it's an important skill and I really want to hone it in.
  • take writing and blogging seriously
This is another thing I am very passionate about, and I want to devote more time to writing and get more serious about it in this new year.
  • decide major and colleges
These are some more huge growing up things to do, and I want to focus down on them and figure them out now because it would make my next few years exponentially easier.
  • do well on acts -30 or higher- and Sats
Can we guess it? Even more grown up things to tackle and get out of the way. Definitely not fun, but necessary.
  • read at least 30 books
I love to read but I often forget about it and reading helps keep me in a good headspace so this will hopefully keep me on a good schedule. The book I am reading now is It's Kind a Funny Story  and I really like it so far. It reminds you to not let your passions get overlooked in the playing the game of life, and those steps you have to take. That's all for now.Mary

story

the want

January 06, 2016

IMG_0399.JPG

I think the first time I said I wanted to be a writer was in the first grade. I probably called it an author at the point, before I knew the innumerable ways writing manifests itself in the world.  That’s what I decided that day.

I Want to Be An Author.

I told my teacher right then and there, too. He gave us a celebratory second recess as a welcoming to the first grade, and every other normal  first grader was instantly animated, working together to construct the lines we had perfected to a tee in kindergarten. Except little Mary. And, as a response to the teacher’s befuddlement at the lack of excitement to why any child would willingly turn down a free recess the little girl donning the long brains said “Can I stay inside and read this? I’m going to be an author”. This earned her a kind chuckle to the enigma that was this first grade girl. She likes to read?? And a bit of showing off to the other teachers along the same lines.

She likes?? to read??

But, she, over time, was pushed along, and nudged into more and more books and attempts at writing on her own by her mentors until she was a bigger girl. A young woman really, who still loves to read, still loves to write, and still like to be just a tad different than her expectations, and she will write in the form of a blog, or novels, articles, anything.

books

to-read list

July 31, 2015

"

Let’s be honest here, I unflinchingly, undoubtedly have a pile of books that have been on the back burner a hundred high. More realistically speaking, more than that. So, with my influx of time before I head back to school for the fall season, I am making it a mission of mine to cross a few off the list, instead of helplessly watching my brain turn into sludge  incapable of holding a pencil come school.
The series I am kicking this off with actually came as a happy accident. Someone actually gave a beautiful, well kept, hardcover copy of Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns  by Lauren Weisberger (Wow it sounds like a bad horror movie series but trust me it’s amazing) to Goodwill. So, naturally I made the 60 cent purchase and was happy on my way. But, obviously I had to read the first book in the series The Devil Wears Prada and with the audiobook and 3 days of fervent listening later I am excited and ready to start the second.

The Second series I am embarking on is The Carrie Diaries series by Candace Bushnell. This is really anticipated read for me as I am an avid fan of the show, (curse the CW for cancelling it) but surprisingly the book is starkly different than the TV show. Although, I do love the TV adaptation better, (something almost never said) the book still holds its own in my heart.

Next I have Looking for Alaska to tuck into by John Green.  As a fan of his work this is the only other book of his I haven’t read other than Let it Snow which I will probably read once the weather outdoors is fitting to the title of the book.
To all the Boys I’ve Loved before is an amazing book {with a beautiful cover} I will actually be rereading so that I can read the second P.S I Still love you that came out earlier this year. This book was such a nice, cute short read. I actually binge read this book in 24 hours the first time {I actually had all my electronics confiscated} and I’m excited to re-read the book and follow it up with the second because the end of the first really leaves you wanting more of the characters and closure, I guess, of what happens next even though you can really tell from how the story ends.
I have a strange affinity for the Persephone greek tale. I have read and re-read so many different adaptations of the story and will probably continue to find and read more. one that I love and am re-reading so that I can read the other books in the series is The Goddess Test . I am absolutely smitten with this book series and am excited to finally get to read all of them soon.

These are all the books I will be beginning soon and I hope you get some inspiration from my short list. Thank you for reading!!
